Tucked just behind the Mediterranean coast, the large Thau lagoon is set in the lovely Languedoc-Roussillon, often referred to as the " Midi de la France". It is a sunny, sheltered part of the Mediterranean, closed off from the open sea but connected to it by the famous Canal du Midi . On the shore of the lagoon, small authentic and charming villages of fishermen and wine- growers have preserved their character. In the Etang de Thau you can swim, dive, fish, sail  and find out all about oyster farming!

Archaeological / historical sites: Within easy driving distance for day trips, choose the Pont du Gard, (the famous aquaduct), the Roman city of Nîmes, the medieval city of Carcassonne, or right nearby, walk a part of the Roman Via Domitia and visit the Gallo-Roman villa of Loupian, to name but a few. Art, Museums and Cultural events: The light and landscapes of the Languedoc have inspired many famous artists. Discover their paintings in one of the museums and galleries of the region: Pay a visit to the Art and History Museum in Narbonne,  or the Archeology Museum in the Cap d'Agde, the Fabre Museum in Montpellier where you find lots of works from Courbet an Frederic Bazille and try to see some of the great museums of contemporary art such as the Carré of Arts in Nîmes and the Modern Art Museum in Ceret.  All year round there are local festivals to be enjoyed in Mèze and its neighbouring towns and villages.
